Picks for a Fresh-Faced, Natural Glow

I live by the tenet that less is more when it comes to make-up, and some of the best "made-up" looks appear to be make-up free. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite go-tos for a natural face.

Mineral Fusion Face Primer
Don't be fooled by this small tube…a little goes a long way! This face primer is an amazingly silky cream that glides on my face. It provides a smooth surface for applying the remainder of my make-up, which is often just a dab of BB cream or blush/bronzer. In addition to making my skin look good, it also contains age-defying ingredients like pomegranate, red tea, white tea, and sea kelp, plus Vitamins C & E. And, it's vegan!
Dose of Colors Baked Highlighter
When I want a really lovely subtle glow, I turn to this Baked Highlighter in Sunkissed. Its mélange of gorgeous warm tones gives me the perfect illuminating glow without exposing my skin to harmful rays. It's a fairly popular product (often sold out on their website), and I fully understand why!
Everyday Minerals Blush
I dig loose powder make-up, but it can get pretty messy if you're not careful. I love Everyday Minerals' Blush because the pigments are gorgeous and natural, and application is a breeze. Simply shake the pot and the right amount is dispersed to the top. It's vegan and handmade in Austin, Texas.

On April 10th, the Leaping Bunny team (Kim, pictured left, and Caitlin, right) traveled to New York to attend the International Make-up Artists Trade Show (IMATS). It was a great opportunity to meet some of our certified cosmetics companies, including BH Cosmetics, Dose of Colors, LimeLight by Alcone, and Gleam by Melanie Mills. We also talked with additional companies and provided them with information on becoming Leaping Bunny certified. It was a wonderful day filled with incredible makeup, demos, and costumes.

Company Spotlight:
Southern Comforts Fragrance

This month we are interviewing the founder of Leaping Bunny certified company, Southern Comforts Fragrance, Allison Solomon-Wales. This indie brand specializes in original, one-of-a-kind scents. Read below to learn more about the inspiration behind the fragrances, favorite products, and even more. Also, check out our blog review on their body butter.

  1. What was the inspiration behind the creation of Southern Comfort Fragrance?
When I first discovered niche and indie perfumes, I was so excited that not only were they often cruelty-free, but they were available in really unique scents that I had never seen in mainstream perfumes before. I talked for years about how I would enjoy making a line based on scents from my time living in the southern states, but I wasn't sure if I had time/energy/space/motivation for another hobby. Finally, my friends and family were able to talk me into buying some supplies and tinkering with fragrances, and I fell in love with the process of making scents.
  2. What is your favorite Southern Comforts Fragrance product/fragrance and why?
That's so hard! It's like asking me to pick which child I love the most. As far as products, I use the hair serum, roll-on fragrance, lotion, body balm, and foaming sugar scrub every single day. I have an ever-rotating fragrance favorite, but right now I'm really loving Coat Of Many Colors. It's the spring version of our all-time bestseller, West Memphis Sweater Weather, and it smells amazing for these warmer days. The notes are: fresh apricot preserves, osmanthus flowers, toasted bread, and creamy white chocolate lattes.
  3. Your scents are so unique and different. How do you come up with them?
A lot of the fragrances are built around my memories of the South growing up. Grandma Odene's House smells just like my own grandmother's kitchen, Darlin' smells like the peach candy and creamy coconut/vanilla sunscreen I remember from being at the beach as a kid, and Kentucky Harvest is this super atmospheric blend that is exactly like picking apples in the fall on those first few really crisp fall days. Really, I just make fragrances that I either want to wear or want to smell on someone else!
  4. Are all of your products vegan?
Yes! We are really passionate animal lovers and bees are the most commonly overlooked exploited animal in both mainstream and indie cosmetics today. It's really important to us that no animals, including our buzzing friends, are harmed in the making of our products, so we use 100% vegan ingredients, including vegan honey fragrance notes and soy wax.

  1. What makes Southern Comforts and its products unique?
There are a ton of amazing indie and niche perfume companies on the market right now, and I would suggest that people try out all of us! I would say that SoCo tries to offer a wider variety of bath and body products, while many other companies focus exclusively on perfumes. I personally love to use a ton of different fragrance products each day in order to feel super pampered, so I wanted to offer than option to our customers.
  2. What has been the most rewarding part of creating Southern Comforts?
I love our customers. We get the sweetest reviews, e-mails, and social media posts from our fans and they always make my day. When one of our cats passed away early this year and then her brother got sick just a few weeks later, our customers were incredible. They totally circled the wagons and helped out by reposting updates on social media, buying a ton of products to help with vet bills, and they even started a special hashtag for the sick kitty. I really think he's alive today thanks to SoCo customers, and it was a really powerful experience getting that kind of love from people we'd never even met. Some of our customers have even become our good friends in real life!
  3. Why is being Leaping Bunny certified important to you?
It's critical that there be a standard for companies claiming to be cruelty-free, and Leaping Bunny provides that. So many companies use the term loosely to mean "we don't personally test on animals," which isn't what being truly cruelty-free means to us. Leaping Bunny ensures that both companies and their suppliers don't test on animals. Because we shop with Leaping Bunny certified companies, it was incredibly important to us that SoCo be Leaping Bunny certified.
  4. What is something unique about Southern Comforts that others may not know?
We are very devoted rescue animal owners! We currently have two special needs Persian cats that were rescued from a breeder, and we are moving to a much bigger place this summer where we intend to expand our special needs animal family to include a dog (and several bunnies, if I get my way). I'm always posting cute cat photos on our Instagram account @southern.comforts!
