Our Cruelty Free Promise: A Commitment to Non-Animal Testing
Over the last two decades, advances in laboratory testing technologies have led to the development of sophisticated non-animal test methods to assess the safety of cosmetic chemicals and products. Choosing these cruelty-free methods of testing offers a host of advantages including: more reliable translation of test data to humans, generation of quantitative and reproducible data, ability to rank test ingredients, and shorter test durations.
Our cruelty-free promise is a commitment to source ingredients only from vendors who certify that ingredients supplied to Sanjeevita are not tested on live animals to support cosmetic applications. Further, our vendors are committed to implementing the use of test methods that are free from any animal derived tissues. We also do not test our cosmetic products on live animals or animal derived tissues.
As you’ll see listed below, our vendors have used a number of different test methods to assess the safety of the cosmetic ingredients used in our products. In general, these non-animal test methods can be classified into three sub-categories:
- Tests on human volunteers: tests conducted on small areas of skin and response is observed. For example, a Repeat Insult Test Patch is used on human volunteers to check for potential dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization
- Computer models and comparator testing: models based on Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) are used to estimate the effect of new chemicals based on previously available data on existing chemicals. A comparator testing approach is also useful to assess safety of an ingredient based on information available for ingredients with similar chemical structure and biological response.
- In-vitro tests: tests conducted using live cells or test kits containing materials (e.g. proteins, dye) that respond to test samples (i.e. testing to measure for skin or eye irritation)
The key ingredients qualified for use in our patent pending deodorizing foot cleanser have been tested using methods such as, Repeat Insult Patch Test on human volunteers to check potential for dermal irritation and allergic contact sensitization and in-vitro tests to assess dermal and eye irritation. Our cruelty-free foot cleanser is gentle on dry skin yet tough on cleansing environmental pollutants and tough on fighting foot malodors.
Creating a Vegan Product Line: Going Beyond Cruelty-Free
Most consumers can easily identify animal derived ingredients like honey, milk, natural beeswax, lanolin etc. that are traditionally used in natural skin care products. However, not so obvious animal derived ingredients and by-products used to formulate a large number of cosmetics include ingredients such as, collagen, squalene, colors, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, lecithin, glycerin, mono- and diglycerides, gelatin, silk, silk by-products etc.
Our commitment at Sanjeevita to choosing clean + green cosmetic ingredients means we choose not to make use of animal derived ingredients and by-products. We source ingredients from vendors who certify them to be free from animal derived materials. The lecithin, waxes, glycerin etc. that are used in our cosmetics primarily come from renewable plant-based materials.
The biocompatible grade of ECOCERT certified lecithin used in our soothing foot balm comes from non-GMO certified soybeans. To help relieve dry and dehydrated skin, our certified cruelty-free and vegan foot balm is a perfect alternative to petroleum, beeswax, and lanolin based creams and ointments. Our patent pending deodorizing foot cleanser is also free of animal derived ingredients and the key ingredients qualified for use in this product are tested using aforementioned cruelty-free test methods. This foot odor neutralizing saponin cleanser is gentle on dry skin and effective in cleaning body oils and environmental pollutants.
